Small-Studio RPGs That Punch Way Above Their Size

Small-Studio RPGs That Punch Way Above Their Size

Big RPGs get all the attention, but some of the best stories on my phone came from teams of three or four people. What they lack in scale they make up for in focus — every character and every fight tends to earn its place.

Turn-based combat has quietly become the ideal fit for mobile. It waits for you, it pauses when you get a call, and it rewards thinking over twitch reflexes. Emberfall Saga in our catalog is a great example of this done right.

My advice when trying a new indie RPG: give it past the first hour. Small teams often front-load the rough edges and save their best writing for once you've settled in. The payoff is usually worth the patience.

Battery and storage matter more here too. The best of these games run beautifully on modest hardware, which is honestly part of the charm.
